Clinical Trials Register

The Group's clinical trials register, also known as the Specialised Register, includes reports of trials in any language, in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of benign and malignant diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract including disorders of the oesophagus, stomach, duodenum and pancreas.

Gastrointestinal adverse effects of certain treatments, for example NSAIDs, are also included in the register. Oesophageal and gastric varices are included by the Hepato-Biliary group, pancreatic complications of cystic fibrosis are covered by the Cystic Fibrosis Group, in their registers, and are therefore excluded from the UGPD register. A full list of the subjects that are covered by the group's specialised register is given in the Topics list.

The register is available online through the Cochrane library. You can search the register by entering "SR-UPPERGI" in the advanced search field.

Hand searching

The UGPD has registered with the New England Cochrane Centre, their intention to handsearch the following specialist journals:

Acta Medica Austriaca 1990-
Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, 1987-
Canadian Journal of Gastroenterology. 1987-
Cancer Research, 1980-
Digestive Endoscopy. 1989-
European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology. (1989-1994)
Helicobacter. 1996-
International Journal of Pancreatology. 1986-
Pancreas. 1986-

Electronic searches

The register is compiled quarterly, through sensitive, systematic searching of bibliographic databases (e.g. Medline, EMBASE and LILACS). The UGPD Group searches The Cochrane Controlled Trials Register to identify controlled clinical trials for inclusion in the specialised register. Handsearching of specialist journals and conference proceedings are carried out to uncover further studies. Relevant unpublished studies are included where available.   There are currently over 8,000 citations in the database.

The UGPD Group's search strategy for The Cochrane Controlled Trials Register has been derived from MeSH subject headings of digestive system diseases and surgical procedures, which are relevant to the scope of the Group. Appropriate free text terms have been used in conjunction with the MeSH headings to identify reports of randomised and controlled clinical trials. The following sensitive search strategy is used to identify citations of randomized clinical trials in bibliographic databases, for inclusion in the trials registry.
